Jamboree Info: Service Corps Recruitment

In just a few months, over 40,000 Scouts and troop leaders will arrive at Fort A.P. Hill in Caroline County, Virginia, for the 2010 National Scout Jamboree and the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. The Order of the Arrow Service Corps will provide cheerful service all over the Jamboree supporting its program for the Scouts and leaders. From serving as an aide to the Chief Scout Executive, to filming with Boys’ Life, and working at a region action center, the areas in which Arrowmen work are endless. Come be a part of it!

Founded in 1950, the OA Service Corps exemplifies how Arrowmen should act and cheerfully serve others. The Service Corps seeks to provide servant leadership through cheerful service to the program areas of the Jamboree. Over 150 Arrowmen are needed to serve. The OA Service Corps needs youth who are willing and are under the age of 21 through the end of the Jamboree. Youth (ages 15-25) serving on the Jamboree staff can attend the 2010 National Scout Jamboree for $397.50.

Lodge Leadership Development Conference and Lodge Banquet Great Successes

The MaNu Lodge held a Lodge Leadership Development Conference at McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church in Norman on Saturday, January 2nd, 2010. At this traning activity, the lodge and chapter officers and advisers studied camp promotion, developed leadership skills, received Elangomat Training, and discussed other issues about successfully running a lodge program. It was immediately followed by a Lodge Executive Committee meeting, and then by the annual lodge banquet. At the banquet we recognized those Arrowmen who had given outstanding service during the past year. In addition to the installation of new lodge and chapter officers, many special recognitions were made, including chapter officer and adviser recognitions, lodge committee chairmen, event chairmen and new Vigil Honor members. MaNu Lodge annual awards were also presented, including the White Buffalo award (see recipient list below), the Miller "Pat" Patterson award to Paul Schmidlkofer, the Bill George award to Aaron Patterson, and the Casy Cundiff Quality Chapter of the Year award to Eagle Chapter. Our highest award, the Founder's Award, was presented to Brin Fair, Aaron Patterson and Paul Schmidlkofer. Additional award recipients included Eagle Chapter for their support of Fall Fellowship, and Cindy Rogers for service as chapter adviser in Kittikima Chapter (Baden-Powell District). We had a great evening of fellowship, celebration and fine food!

Vigil Weekend: Excellent Food and the Rain Held Off!

Vigil Weekend was held November 14-15 at Camp George Thomas and was attended by 79 Arrowmen. Of the 24 Vigil candidates in the Class of 2009, 21 attended this initiation opportunity. The food was excellent, as usual, and included fried chicken and catfish. Despite threatening rain, the foul weather did hold off long enough to provide a reasonably pleasant experience for everyone.

Fall Fellowship a Great Success (Despite the Rain!)

MaNu Lodge held a Fellowship at Slippery Falls Scout Ranch on September 11-13. More than 140 lodge members participated in the event which offered a regalia class, leave no trace training, patch collecting, shooting sports (blackpowder, shotgun and .22 rifle), and a triathlon, just to name a few.  Four Ordeal members sealed their membership by completing their Brotherhood. On Saturday evening, the lodge called out 24 members for Vigil honor, and on Sunday morning we concluded with an LEC and lodge elections.  There were also six new Bowstring Society members inducted. By the time the event was over, we'd had three inches of rain . . . and a ton of fun!

When you see Brenda Humann, Jason Linn, James Reeves III and James Reeves, Jr, be sure to congratulate them on their newly sealed Brotherhood. Our new Bowstring Society members are Cameron Jones, Allan Jones, Micheal Barnes, John Wolford, Randy Patteson and Tylar Loveday. And don't forget to shake the hand of those called out for Vigil honor:

Spring Ordeal A Great Success!

Spring Ordeal was held May 15-17 at Slippery Falls Scout Ranch. The Ordeal administration team led by Brin Fair from CT chapter, and staffed primarily with youth from BP chapter, did a superb job of planning and conducting the event. The youth were advised by a team of hard-working adults primarily from BP Chapter led by Cindy Rogers (Chapter adviser). This was one of the best planned and most efficiently executed Ordeals in recent memory. Activities were well-managed, and the versatility of the teams allowed for tasks to be accomplished, even with the advent of hazardous weather and less than ideal conditions. Approximately 125 current lodge members and a number of guests attended. 112 new members were inducted, and 37 members sealed their Brotherhood. Check-in and Ordeal operations were conducted in the new Welcome Center/Program Building. Service projects for candidates and members were affected because many areas of camp were not easily accessible due to the softness off the ground. Vehicles became stuck in the soft ground very easily. A total of 28 large trailer loads of brush and limbs were cleared from the areas where power lines had been installed. Seven of the loads were run through a wood chipper, and these chips were spread in the seating and aisle areas of the council fire ring. The remainder of the loads were piled across from the climbing barn. A total of 24 tent platform sections were constructed from materials supplied by the camp. The sections were moved into a campsite and will make the placement of 12 tents possible when the necessary concrete blocks are placed under the platforms. A variety of other small maintenance and cleanup operations were completed. A "New Member" Orientation/Welcome was conducted after dinner Saturday evening.

A meeting of Ma-Nu Lodge's National Order of the Arrow (NOAC) contingent members was also conducted by Neal Green, contingent leader. Currently there are 21 contingent members. The submission of various administrative and medical forms was discussed. Our final payment of participant fees is due to national by the May 31 to preclude late fees. Members who require a medical waiver were reminded to insure timely submission of their requests.

A Section Conclave to Remember - And plans for 2010 and 2012

The Ma-Nu Lodge contingent has just returned from the 2009 Section 8 Conclave at Camp Rockefeller, hosted by the Quapaw Lodge. Our contingent was comprised of 51 Brothers of whom 21 were youth. Those of you that were unable to attend missed a memorable event. The weekend was comprised of many greats - great food, great weather, and a great camp, a host lodge that did a great job, great entertainment, and a great learning and competitive spirit by all who attended. The lodge contingent participated in a wide variety of training activities on Saturday morning, and then shifted into competitive mode for the Quest events and Ceremony Evaluations in the afternoon. Brin Fair, the Chapter Chief of Neh Ma Neh Chapter in Chisholm Trail District, received an excellent rating for his performance of the Vigil Ceremony - Congratulations, Brin!

Section 8 of the Southern Region is comprised of nine lodges spread across Oklahoma and Arkansas. This was the first conclave for our new Section and there were over 700 (that is not a typo - over 700) Arrowmen in attendance. The outstanding weather, facilities, and superb food (from the venison chili at Friday night' Crackerbarrel, to the tender steaks Saturday evening and at Sunday breakfast), coupled with the quality and variety of training, will make this conclave a benchmark for future events. We, as a lodge, need to ready ourselves and our camp to accept the challenge of hosting a conclave in the near future. I propose that we bid to host the 2012 conclave and that the venue be Slippery Falls Scout Ranch. There will be much to be done to make this happen and I challenge our leadership, both youth and adult, to start forming a plan now to make it happen. Conclave 2010 for Section 8 will be hosted by Washita Lodge whose council office is located in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. The conclave will be held at the Osage County Fairgrounds in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. Section conclaves are historically held the fourth weekend of April making the dates April 23-25, 2010. As many of you may already know, Pawhuska is the home of Boy Scout Troop 1, the first Boy Scout troop in the United States. Conclave 2010 will be conducted at a unique venue for an OA activity of this magnitude and should be great fun. Please mark your calendars now, pass the word, and plan to attend.

Yours in Service,
Tom Huibregtse
Ma-Nu Lodge Adviser
